Ancient myth and the post-modern present collide in the genre-bending queer love story written by Amelio Garcia, co-conceived by OTP’s William Hodgson and Lisa Ramirez and inspired by Anne Carson’s novel Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse, and directed by William Hodgson.

In Greek myth, Geryon is a triple-bodied, red-winged monster, slayed by Herakles (Hercules) in one of his mythical labors. In Carson’s telling, however, “Geryon is a young boy who is also a winged red monster who begins an autobiography at age five.” Later in life, Geryon falls in love with Herakles.

Hailed by the New York Times Book Review as “a profound love story... sensuous and funny, poignant, musical and tender,” this novel and poem is a “portrait of an artist coming to terms with the fantastic accident of who he is.”

CAST

Romeo Channer

Romeo Channer (Red) is an actor from Berkeley. When not performing, Romeo teaches, stage manages, and participates in local activism. They are a recent graduate of Mills College, where they studied queer and post-colonial history.

They are beyond thrilled to return to their artistic home at the Oakland Theater Project, where past roles include Jean Dark in 'sAiNt jOaN (burn/burn/burn)', Ariel in 'The Tempest', and Mary Warren in 'The Crucible.'

Anthony Doan

Anthony (H/Etc.) is a queer, first-generation Vietnamese American theatre artist currently based in the Bay Area. Notable acting credits include Nguyen, Quang, and Sam in the world premiere of Colonialism is Terrible, But Pho is Delicious (Aurora Theatre Company, Oregon Contemporary Theatre), Christian in Cyrano de Bergerac: A Queeroic Comedy (Island Shakespeare Festival), Playwright and understudy for Nhan in Vietgone (City Lights Theater Company), and John Lee in Porcelain (Brown Bag Theatre Company). Anthony strives to viscerally entertain and challenge audiences, provoke political thoughts, and inspire people to empathetically listen to the world in a different vibration.
